Prayer Focus

This prayer session focuses on worship excellence, leadership grace, spiritual sensitivity, vocal and instrumental harmony, unity among choir members, disciplined preparation, an atmosphere of genuine worship, freedom from distraction, fresh inspiration, spiritual strength, humility, excellence in ministry, and the exaltation of Jesus Christ.

Bible Exhortation

Worship is first and foremost an expression of love, reverence and devotion to God.

Jesus said:

“God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.” — John 4:24

This means worship cannot be reduced to musical quality alone. Excellent sound is valuable, but God desires a heart that is surrendered to Him.

Psalm 96:9 says:

“O worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness…”

The Levites in Scripture were prepared for musical service, and their ministry involved skill, order and dedication. First Chronicles 25:7 speaks of those who were:

“instructed in the song of the LORD, all that were cunning.”

Excellence and spirituality do not have to compete. A worship team can pursue musical excellence while maintaining a heart completely yielded to God.

The choir director must also understand that leadership involves people. Different personalities, voices, abilities and levels of maturity must work together. Therefore, prayer is needed for patience, unity, conflict resolution, communication and spiritual maturity.

The ultimate goal is not that people admire the choir.

The ultimate goal is that people encounter the greatness of God and give Him glory.

Prophetic Illustration

Consider an orchestra.

Many instruments may have different sounds, ranges and functions. The violin does not sound like the trumpet, and the percussion does not function like the piano.

Yet when every musician follows the conductor and stays in proper rhythm, the different sounds become one harmonious composition.

The same principle applies to a church choir.

Every voice may be different. Every member may have a different personality, background and level of musical ability. But when everyone submits to the same purpose, preparation and leadership, diversity can become harmony.

The choir director therefore needs more than musical knowledge.

The director needs the grace to bring different people into unified service.

I am a servant of God, and my worship ministry belongs to Jesus Christ.
